Woodlands Perryville: A Sustainable Development

Tasked with master planning a sustainable, mixed-use community in Perryville, Maryland, Jonathan Miller Architects and their team responded with many innovative approaches. The result is a plan that has thrilled the local community and exceeded the developer’s expectations.

The developer’s mission was to create a community with the feel of a small town, a community that accented the town of Perryville and enhanced the unique sense of place already inherent to the area while respecting the environment, both immediate and global. 

Sustainable elements incorporated into the master plan of the Woodlands include:

• Rain Gardens

• Green Roofs

• Porous Paving

• Joint Use Parking

• Dedicated Open Spaces

• Walkable Community

• Connections to Existing Neighborhoods

The plan not only included new residential and commercial spaces, but also incorporated new civic and religious spaces. This incorporation of public and private interests was only accomplished through close partnership with the town officials and local residents. This successful partnership hinged greatly on a five day design charette conducted by Jonathan Miller Architects which gathered input from town officials, residents, and design team members. This charette formed the basis for the final master plan which was presented to the town a short time later.
